Yatala Pies vs KP Gourmet Bakery

Yatala Pies has a reputation for making the best pies in Brisbane. We had been told this on many occasions since arriving in Brisbane in 1994. I'm not a big fan of meat pies, so a pie needs to be pretty good for me to enjoy it. Unfortunately Yatala pies did not live up to their reputation.

In July 2007 with nothing better to do on a Sunday afternoon, we took a drive down to Yatala to try these famous pies.

The shop was clean. There were hundreds of people milling around, about 10 cars in the drive through section and around 30 people ahead of us in the queue inside the shop.

The range of pies was very good, but knowing that I am very fussy when it comes to meat pies I also ordered a berry pie as a fallback in case I didn't like the traditional meat pie.

On my vry first bite of the meat pie and I got a piece of meat and a piece of gristle. I hate gristle. Usually, the first piece of gristle would turn me off a pie forever, but I gave it another bite - no gristle on the second bite. Another bite, and the gristle filled pie ended up in the bin. The berry pie came in handy, although hardly filling. It was tiny.

It makes me wonder why the place was so busy. Does it survive on reputation alone - does it actually have any regular customers, or have the regulars learned to avoid the meat pies?

To be honest, I have only ever come across one pie shop anywhere that serves pies with nice chunks of steak and absolutely no gristle. We have the fortune of living quite close to this little bakery and their pies are superb. The bakery is called KP Gourmet Bakery and it is on the corner of Scrub Road and Old Cleveland Road, Carindale, Queensland. If the quality of the food were to determine the number of customers, Yatala Pies would be struggling and KP Gourmet Bakery would have customers coming from all over Queensland.

We have no association with KP Gourmet Bakery - their food is just so good we think everyone should know about it.

Salt Resort - Kingscliff

We recently had the pleasure of staying for a weekend at the Salt Resort, Kingscliff, NSW.

It was the wedding of our daughter, and she couldn't have picked a better venue. All the guests had a wonderful time, and the service at the resort was wonderful. Our contact at the resort "Steve" took care of everything including things that we hadn't even thought of, and a few extra personal touches to make the occasion most enjoyable.

Cleanaway Brisbane

Have you ever dealt with a company that rigs it's contracts in such a way as to allow them to increase the contract price by any amount they want to at any time they feel like it, for any reason (ie. to increase profits) what-so-ever? We have. We won't go into too many specifics here, because the full details can be seen on the Unfair Contracts Web Site. We will say this though...
"If you currently have a contract of any type with Cleanaway, check the terms and conditions thoroughly. Check the fine print. Get every amendment in writing and be absolutely sure that there is no ambiguity in the amendments. Don't accept any verbal agreements."

When checking the terms

  • Imagine that you are employed to write the contract.
  • Imagine that you are an extremely dishonest and deceiptful person.
  • Look for ways that you could exploit the contract terms to the advantage of Cleanaway.
  • If you find a way to exploit the terms, assume that Cleanaway already know about it and that they will do so too.

Holden Commodore

Back around the late 1990's we purchased a Holden Commodore from John Sivyer Holden in Marooka, Queensland. The car was not bad, although very high in petrol consumption. One day however, we started to notice oil on our driveway.

This car was regularly serviced, but was now around 6 months out of warranty. On checking under the car, the outside of the sump was completely covered in a film of oil.

On having the car checked by the John Sivyer Holden service department we were told that the car had a "porous sump". Apparently it was a defect with the vehicles that didn't show up within the first few years because it takes the oil a few years to seep through. Once the oil seeps through and reaches the outside of the sump, you get a continuous seepage of oil through the sump, and the flow becomes faster due to capilliary action.

The verdict - "You'll have to get a new sump at a cost of over $600.00."

The car was indeed out of warranty, but Holden themselves admitted that the problem was a defective part that had been defective since the car rolled off the assembly line. Holden were hiding behind the fact that this particular defect was one that would not make itself known until after the car was out of warranty.

I don't know how prevalent this problem is, but according to John Sivyer Holden, it was quite a common problem. The cars were never recalled by Holden because it wasn't a life threatening defect, and the defect would not be noticed until after the warranty had expired.

Because they taste funny.

Site Summary: The Coldrick Web Site is available to everyone and the content is family orientated. It is a place to slow down, relax and browse. It isn't a fast paced site. To get the most from the site you need to click a few buttons and read the pages or look at the pictures. There are over 2000 jokes which appear randomly at the bottom of most pages, admittedly many are quite lame. We even believe that the lamest joke in the world may be amongst them - see if you can find it. A few jokes may be slightly risque but we don't believe there are any that would be unsuitable for a young audience. There are over 1700 trivia questions which can be browsed using the random trivia page. You may like to play the trivia quiz when you feel you know enough of the answers. The site also contains some information on UFO's (Unidentified Flying Objects) and some interesting paranormal information including voodoo, spontaneous human combustion and psychic powers. You might like to voice your opinion on the questions in the Polls Page, or check the family tree to see if you may be remotely related to the yobbo's who run the site.
