Voodoo in Haiti

25th October 2006

We will kick off with our experiences in Haiti. Ordinarily, Voodoo - or Vodun - is not as sinister as some movies and books would have you believe. Voodoo is a religion. It is a mixture of Catholicism and the tribal beliefs of the Haitian people.

Haitians worship a God and many spirits or Loa, and for the most part, that's about the sum of it. They have some strange rituals designed to appease the spirits and bring prosperity, but most Haitians have nothing to do with dark magic that is often attributed to Voodoo.

Sebastian was however investigating a Voodoo curse which seemed to be having an affect on a young Haitian boy living in Florida. The boy was growing gradually sicker every day. He was no longer able to eat solid food, and reportedly visible burn marks would appear on his body daily - without any identifiable cause. The boy's parents were adamant that the cause was Voodoo and that they knew who was responsible. They were just too afraid to confront the culprit.

Now without dwelling on this case too much, I'm happy to report that Sebastian sorted the whole situation out and the boy has made a full recovery.

What is of interest though are some of the things I saw in Haiti relating to this case. We attended a real Voodoo service, not one of the touristy ones they hold in Port-au-Prince. This was the real deal and was held in a small village about a 60km dusty drive from the city.

  • At the service I am positive that I saw a woman they called Mambo levitate for a few seconds - I don't know for sure. I keep thinking back and going over the scene in my mind. I have no other explanation. It wasn't a jump and I'm sure there was no trickery involved. She wasn't a small woman either. Ordinarilly I would suggest that a crane would need to be used to get that woman off the ground.
  • Several times, I saw the same Mambo sheila go into a trance of some sort and speak with a voice that I can only describe as "unnatural". If she was making the voice herself, it was a great party trick. A bit like that voice that came from little Regan in the Exorcist, but even more disturbing. I get chills just thinking about it.
  • The many weird things I saw at the Voodoo ceremony could all probably be explained away by someone hearing the story second hand. All I can really offer is this - you had to be there. You just can't do justice to some things by writing about them. I believe that strangers don't often get to see these rituals, so I feel privileged and I'm very glad I made the acquaintance of Sebastian.
  • Later, after the ceremony we visited the home of the alleged attacker of the boy in Florida. I saw several voodoo dolls. One, which Sebastian took particular interest in, could very well have been used to torture the poor boy. It had a twine holding it's stomach tightly and scores of tiny burn marks all over it. This doll was retained by Sebastian once he did whatever he did to make the guy stop his torment.
  • I did see an alleged "zombi", but I am very sceptical about the truth behind zombis. I am more inclined to believe Western explanations that zombis are created by use of drugs to make the victim appear dead, and then using new drugs to semi-awaken the unearthed victim after the burial.
