During daylight hours on May 25, 1990, a huge disk-shaped object hovered over the Turkmenistan town of Mary at an altitude of around 1000 meters. The craft was observed by military personnel from less than 3000 meters away. Colonel Kurchy gave orders for three ground-to-air guided missiles to be fired at it. The craft maneuvered slightly and disintegrated the missiles with beams of light from its port side. Colonel Kurchy then ordered two interceptor jets scrambled. At approximately 1000 meters, the jets were thrown from the sky, destroying both planes and killing the pilots. Colonel Kurchy was removed from his post by the Air Command and procedures were initiated against him, according to Paragraph 1, Item 5 of the Turkmenistan Criminal Code.
